The Social Physics and Complexity (SPAC) Lab invites expressions of interest from candidates wishing to pursue a PhD as part of our team.
SPAC will support selected candidates to apply to the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) PhD fellowships in the first trimester of 2025. We will offer support and guidance for the preparation of their applications, including help in designing independent research ideas and in grant writing.
SPAC Lab is an ERC funded, multidisciplinary research group that uses a data-driven, complex systems approach to better understand individual and algorithmic bias and their broader implications. We also focus on the risks of artificial intelligence (AI) and of computational social sciences (CSS) approaches in general, and help establish the guidelines for their ethical use.
Candidates must have completed an MSc or BSc by the end of 2024 in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Psychology or equivalent.
Interested applicants should send their CV, a brief statement of research interests, and the contact details of two references by December 19, 2024.
We are an equal opportunity employer, foster a collegial and curiosity-driven atmosphere and strongly support applications from women and minorities in science.

Application must contain:
• 1-page Letter of motivation, detailing why you would like to do a PhD, why at SPAC and which questions interest you the most
• 2-page Curriculum Vitae, including key courses taken and any research experience you have (you do not need to have publications to apply)
• Contacts of two references (ideally, more senior academic colleagues who have worked directly with you or taught a class in which you did particularly well)
